Admiralty and Maritime Law

Our maritime practice includes defense of personal injury claims, collision, cargo and property damage claims, negotiation and enforcement of maritime contracts and charter parties, ship mortgages, pollution liability issues, and the occassional case involving shipwreck and treasure salvage. We regualrly appear in state and federal courts for clients located all over the world, and we represent mariners and vessel owners before the United States Coast Guard and in dealings with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.

Railroad Law

We represent railroads in personal injury claims brought under the Federal Employers Liability Act (FELA), other personal injury claims, and cargo and property damage issues.

Small Businesses

We serve in a "general counsel" status for a number of small businesses, many of whom were created with our advice and assistance. Creating corporations, limited liability companies (LLC's), and partnerships is something that generally should be done with the assistance of an attorney, especially for those with limited prior experience in running their own businesses. Missteps in this area can have tax, insurance, and liability consequences that can be easily avoided with proper planning and forethought.

Real Property Matters

This area of our practice includes assisting our clients with respect to purchases, sales, and leases of commercial property. We also have signficiant experience litigating disputes involving commercial property, including trespass, property damage, and commercial lease disputes.

Commercial Litigation

Disputes involving business matters frequently result in litigation in state or federal court. Claims for breach of contract, injunction actions, employment agreements, property damage, trademarks, copyrights, and insurance coverage all require the assistance of skilled counsel, and we have significant experience with such disputes.

Nursing Home Law

We serve in a "general counsel" role to a number of nursing homes, handling employment matters, insurance and contract issues, and regulatory questions from the state and federal government.
